Our First Wedding Anniversary

It is a really long time I have written anything here. Life has been too busy with lots of trips to native as well as racing to fulfill my career dreams. I guess it is also a bit late to write about this topic. It was last week my husband and I had completed a year of marital life.

Wedding anniversaries are really special to every couple. But the first one? It comes only once and it happens to be much more special than the 2nd. 3rd and so on. At least that is what I imagined.

The year
This year was more of a roller coaster ride. It seems like this one year has been very short but at the same time feels really long.  Even after knowing him for 3years as my best friend, one year as my boyfriend and 4months as my fiancee, (full story here) there were so many shades to his character I had yet to discover because, all this years we were not being completely our real self. We were trying to be at our best and to impress each other. Now that we had started living together, it all had changed. There were many things about his character that surprised me and some that shocked me as well. I found him at his best in our bad times that made me fall in love with him all over again. Whatever was the situation, I always found him by my side supporting me. There were days we have fought (okay, I fought and he stayed silent) but it ends making our bond stronger than before. So overall the year was great!

The day
As we both had fever a few days back, I had expected the day to be dull. I opened my eyes in the morning and was so impatient to start the day so tried to wake him up but he was not done with his share of sleep and curled up the other side covering his eyes with the quilt to block the light. I was debating from 3 days on when to give him the gifts. But now, jealous of him, I suddenly pulled the quilt off the bed to which he grumbled and gestured me to go away. Excited that I was able to irritate him, I took out one gift and gave it to him. Now no excuse. He has to get up. He just opened a corner of his eye to see if I am just using another prank to wake him up. Realizing I was telling the truth, he jumped up, sat cross-legged and stared at the box I gave him. He asked 'You made this cover?' and I nodded.

I had started making it a day before. Crazy about crafting, I have always given him handmade cards for Valentine’s Day, his birthday etc. But this time he had least expected that this would be one of my crafting projects for the day. My mom had once complimented my perfection at the crafts that I have to gift wrap the waste paper pieces and give him to make him realize that I have made it so that he doesn’t mistake it for a card I bought from a gift shop(I know it is too much for a compliment). I guess it is called a magic exploding box. When you open it, it falls apart like an explosion to reveal what is inside.

I had got this idea from the internet. It took me around 3 hrs to complete it. I had wanted to add many more stuffs but the after effects of fever the previous day had stopped me. But still I was happy with the outcome and he was happy with it too. It was a pleasant surprise for him and his priceless expression clearly said he loved it. I felt that seeing it the first thing in the morning had really had an extra impact.

I had actually expected him to not get any gift for me because his fever was severe and he was still very weak. But to my surprise he took out packet from his bag. I guessed it was a dress or something but it ended up to be a peacock color silk saree which I had always wanted. When I had thought that this was it, he handed me a small box. When I opened it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. A pair of daily-wear gold earrings (I have worn in the above pic) which I was planning to buy from a month. With so much weakness, I had least expected that he would get anything. But this was the best gift ever (not because it is gold).

Too weak to go out for lunch, we decided to get something from out and eat at home. At around 1pm, it started raining cats and dogs and power supply was irregular. For dinner, I had planned a quality time at home with him. I had decorated our house with candles and turned on a slide show of photos we had taken together post wedding on the 32 inch TV with slow romantic background music. And we had candle-light dinner. The menu included sweet corn soup, masala papad, chicken chilly, chicken curry, basmati rice and gulab jamun all prepared by me (Yup! I am good). We also cut a chocolate raffle cake and at the end, I gave my second gift- a DVD player with gaming remote. This dvd player has solved our problem of watching movies on TV from USB. His excitement was worth watching as this was the first electronic gadget he got as a gift from me.

Thus even though we both were really weak, the day ended up to be one of the most memorable days. And for my hubby, all I have to say is that ‘Who said you fall in love only once in a lifetime? I have fallen for you like a zillion times!’.
P.S.: To know more about how men should tackle their married life with extreme ease and confidence, check my hubby's post on wedding anniversary.

Nicely compiled Wifey.. that sums it all :P Thanks (well I need not say it.. but your extra efforts deserves some recognition :P ;) ) for making it worth remembering... Especially when your other half ( which is me of-course) is so much dull & weak due to illness..

But hey, I see there are few things missing. There are no pics of other gifts and the decorations you made @ night.. don't we have those pics!?

BTW, I was hoping to be the first one to write about the same topic on my blog. Now that you have written (about the celebration) let me concentrate on other aspects of this one year we spent together. Haven't started it yet. But will do soon.

And finally I would like to say - looking forward to spend or shall I say celebrate many more anniversaries like the one above... :)

Cheers!
Yours poor hubby :P

oh I see the last line is not published.. hmm.. guess it was commented out.. what I wanted to say after 'Yours poor hubby' is that - the phrase 'poor' suits the line well as per what you have mentioned in the blog - where it says - " There were days we have fought (okay, I fought and he stayed silent) " :P ;)

First of all, my heartiest wishes to Sunil and you for your first Anniversary ! :-) May you both celebrate countless more and each one being better than the previous. :-)

And it was an absolute joy to read about how you both celebrated your Anniversary even though not being in the best of health. I have so often debated with so many people on the topic of 'Love vs Arranged' and believed that something like this wasn't just hypothetical. And it feels great to know that a couple like you does exist. :-)

Though the only part of the post that made me cringe was where you described the delicious dinner. :-/ :P It sounded so yummy. :-)

And the pictures were awesome. Hope you both are absolutely fine in health now.

Thank you so much Shobhit :) As I have always said, it is a delight to see your comment!

By the way, thanks for your concern, we are fine now, doc :)

About the dinner, thanks a lot. I have recently learnt to prepare food (given the fact that cooking is not my hobby) and I really did not know anything more than the regular food. Somehow managed. The food was actually just okay and by the grace of god, eatable. :P

Hello Preethika.
Many congratulations to you and Sunil on completing your first Wedding Anniversary. What a wonderful way to celebrate too with gifts given from the heart. You are very creative and obviously a good cook. Sunil has a gem in you as do you in him. I have been married for 10 years (my wife & I celebrated our 10th Anniversary this past January). We have had our share of ups and downs, but what has gotten us through the bad times is our togetherness. My only advice to you and Sunil is to always respect each other no matter what. Show each other kindness and compassion. Listen to each other, be open to discussion and be honest with each other. Lies and deceit have no place in marriage. There will be tough times ahead, but do not turn away from each other when faced with the trials of life. Instead, lean on each other for strength and comfort, for when you are married, there is no more "I", but only "we". Finally, you both love each other, but always tell Sunil you love him and he must say it to you too not just once in a while, but several times a day. Always let love be your guide (smile). I wish you both many, many more years of happiness. May love and laughter always exist in your life and in your home. Best wishes to you both. Thanks for sharing and for reading my 10th Anniversary post.
